Carl Lohman, Chair of the Annual Canvass, outlined the strategy for this year’s campaign. The theme will be responsible stewardship of MVUC by members and friends. A chart will be prepared showing the range of pledges we received last year and the number of pledges in each category. Letters will be sent to all, but telephone canvassing will be downplayed. Carl believes that it’s particularly important to conduct a low-key canvass this year in view of the fact that a Capital Campaign may be launched later this year. Special appeals will be made to non-pledgers and to low pledgers.
The Board approved a preliminary budget for 2003-04. This budget, which is slightly higher than the current year’s, will be the basis for open information sessions following both services on January 19. These meetings will give our members and friends an opportunity to express their priorities for the 2003-04 budget.
Joan Wamsley reported that she and Finance Committee member Al Erickson both feel that we do not need to make a mid-year budget adjustment since the current budget numbers are close enough to the projected amounts.
The Board approved new charters for the Music Committee and the Personnel Committee.
The Board approved Peg Bartel, Ron Brandt, and Bill Alsmeyer-Johnson as MVUC’s members on the Board of Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice, an alliance of UU churches in the Washington-Baltimore area.
The Board voted to change W. Stephen Walter to the status of inactive member. Mr. Walter has moved to Herndon and he has not replied to a letter of inquiry sent by the MVUC office staff over two months ago.
The Board authorized the Books Committee to dispose of the books in the McCully Library, as appropriate. This collection was given to MVUC many years ago. The books were boxed during the time that extensive renovations were in progress in Hollin Hall, as a consequence of its being selected as the Campagna Center’s 1994 Alexandria Decorator Showhouse. We have been unable to contact the heirs of the donor regarding this book collection.
