The BoT met at 7:30 PM on October 3rd.
The BoT discussed revising the procedure for approving the meeting minutes. It was decided to continue with the current process of approval by e-mail.
Joanne provided an outline of the structure of the Special Congregational Meeting scheduled for October 22. Several BoT members will be assisting in checking members in, passing out voting slips and counting votes. The Social Justice Council will be presenting the agenda and responding to questions prior to the votes.
Jim Potter gave an update on Membership Development activities. The Shoeleather Project led by John Henrehan has distributed about 75% of the 20,000 packets printed to volunteers. Roughly one-third have been delivered to homes. There have been 9-10 first-time visitors each of the past few Sundays. The greeters are doing an excellent job.
Joanne requested suggestions for a replacement for Janice Fitzpatrick on the Nominating Committee.
The BoT received reports from Rev. Louis Schwebius, Donna Bledsoe and Meagan Henry. Rev. Lou presented the DRE report as Megan was at a conference. Meagan is looking for participation from the Congregation in the ‘For All Ages’ section of Sunday Services. Rev. Lou stated that he and Meagan are working to tweak her job description to more accurately convey and define her areas of responsibility (i.e., Adult Religious Education/Enrichment). Rev. Lou also reported continued strong response from the Shoeleather project and thanked the Greeters for making sure visitors are introduced to him. Rev. Lou also announced that MVUC, along with the other Northern Virginia UU congregations, is part of the Commonwealth Coalition opposing the Marshall/Newman Amendment. He will be delivering a sermon in opposition to the Amendment and will continue to perform marriages between all couples regardless of their sexual
orientation. The board expressed its full support for Rev. Lou's actions. Donna has been working on replacing Betsy Clagett who is resigning as Event Coordinator effective November 1. Donna also reported the tenant of the Hollin Hall apartment is leaving.
The Policy and Bylaw Review Committee will be meeting during October to define the process of reconciling MVUC's Policies and By-Laws.
The BoT discussed the the September Retreat. One significant outcome of the retreat was a desire to review the mission statement of MVUC. Joanne suggested a Mission Review group be formed. Joanne, Lisa Guide, Wendy Burns, Lauck Walton, Jane Nelson, and Rev. Schwebius volunteered to participate in the group.
The meeting adjourned at 8:50 PM.
