Description

In 1987, an Endowment Committee was established to manage the MVUC Endowment Fund. The purpose of the endowment is to help secure, strengthen, and extend the long-term survival and mission of MVUC and Unitarian Universalism. The Endowment Fund can be viewed as a permanent “rainy day account” for MVUC. Once sufficient amounts have been contributed, the fund will provide longevity and assistance during financial emergencies. The fund can also provide additional monies for maintaining our buildings and grounds or funding other programs.

Through the generosity of many of our Members and Friends over the years as well as investment income, the MVUC Endowment now has almost $500,000 in liquid assets. There are also substantial contingent assets we anticipate receiving through estate planning undertaken by Members. These generous contributors are providing stewardship for those who will follow them to our Holy Hill.

The policy established by the Board of Trustees requires the Endowment Fund’s liquid assets reach $1,000,000 before any expenditures can be made and the principal is never to be spent. Looking ahead, we believe that once the fund reaches $1,000,000, income derived from it can pay for a significant portion of the activities required to maintain our buildings and grounds, as well as enhance the church programs.

There are a number of ways that Members and Friends can contribute to securing the financial future of MVUC through the Endowment Fund:

Bequests: suggested text

To assist you in planning for the long term future of MVUC and our holy hill, the Endowment Committee suggests the following language:

Specific bequest

“I give, devise and bequeath to the ENDOWMENT FUND OF MOUNT VERNON UNITARIAN CHURCH, 1909 Windmill Lane, Alexandria, Virginia, ___________________ or $_____________.”

Percentage bequest

“I give, devise and bequeath to the ENDOWMENT FUND OF MOUNT VERNON UNITARIAN CHURCH, 1909 Windmill Lane, Alexandria, Virginia, _______ percent of my estate.”

Residual bequest

“I give, devise and bequeath to the ENDOWMENT FUND OF MOUNT VERNON UNITARIAN CHURCH, 1909 Windmill Lane, Alexandria, Virginia, all the residue of my estate, including tangible, intangible, real and personal property.”

Please consult with an attorney to determine the option that best matches your circumstances and financial situation.
