Our Newly Called Settled Minister

Called Sunday April 13, 2008

kate (13K) At the congregational meeting held after the second service the congregation overwhelmingly voted to call Kate Walker as our new settled minister. She has accepted our call and will start her ministry at Mt. Vernon on August 1, 2008.

Kate comes to us from the UU Church of Meadville (www.uumeadville.org), PA, where she has been the settled minister for ten years. She and her husband, Mark Gorman, are currently in the process of adopting a child from China. Mark is planning on being a stay at home Dad. Kate's father was a UU minister and her step mother, Marlene Walker, was ordained at MVUC after serving as an intern here.

Kate earned her Masters of Divinity from Starr King School for the Ministry in 1997, Kate has also earned a Bachelors of Arts in Mass/Speech Communication from the University of Denver and a Master of Arts in Social Ecology from Goddard College in Vermont.

Here are some of Kate's own words:

" I am looking for a church community that is committed to growth both in numbers and spiritual maturity. I want to fully engage and explore all aspects of my ministry; preaching, community development, and social justice. I love preaching and have spent significant time and effort developing my preaching skills. I want a community that wants to be intellectually challenged, emotionally inspired and to grow spiritually."

"Social Justice work is something I grew up with and feel is part of my ground of being."

"In my sermons and worship services in general, I strive for a thological balance, as well as a balance of emotion, spirit and intellect."

"If there were only one thing I would say about my ministry, it would be this, ministry is built on a formation of trust. Good ministry grows from a minister who cares, is ethical and is an attentive professional, always extending trust to the congregation and earning trust in return."

Kate is energetic, warm and welcoming, a very good listener and communicator, and has a sense of humor. We really enjoyed her company during the pre-candidating weekend that she was here. We were all very pleased and inspired by the sermon that she gave as a guest minister at a local UU Church. Please plan to come and see Kate in the pulpit on April 6th and 13th. The Ministerial Search Committee will be planning several events during that week where members will have the opportunity to meet with and ask questions of Kate. Watch for details in the Windmill and on the website, www.mvuc.org.

Sincerely,
The Ministerial Search Committee
