Awards and Certifications

In its 50+ years of existence, the social justice program at MVUC was recognized for its active involvement in the larger community. Below, please find a listing of the most outstanding awards and certifications MVUC received since the 60s, in descending order, with the most recent awards listed first.

-Mid-Size Congregation Social Justice Award
2011, awarded by the Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice (UUSJ) for the overall quality and diversity of the program

- Outstanding UU Award
2011, awarded to Joan Darrah, chair of the Board of trustees, by the Joseph Priestley District, in recognition of her work to repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell, as well as numerous other contributions to the life of the church.

- Stewardship for Partnership Award
2010, awarded to Lisa Gillispie, chair of the Partner Church Committee, by the Unitarian Universalist Partner Church Council, in recognition of her contributions to promote and enhance the Partner Church program.

- Commendation from the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia 2009; awarded to MVUC for its efforts in social justice and as an expression of GA's admiration for MVUC's achievements.

- Bennett Award for Congregational Action on Human Justice and Social Action
2008, awarded by the Unitarian Universalist Association, in recognition of outstanding work for social justice.

- Green Sanctuary Certification
2008, awarded by the Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Earth, in recognition of the completion of requirements for Green Sanctuary status.

2008, awarded by the Naturalist and National Wildlife Federation.

2008, awarded by Ventures in Community Hypothermia Project [VIC-HOP], for services to the homeless shelter.
