Edible Gardens

Edible Gardens

What are they? Where can I find more information?

The long and short of the idea of edible gardens is to replace grass lawns with gardens that are beautiful but at the same time composed of plants that are edible. Why spend the spring and summer months watering grass, why not use that water on plants you can eat?

Edible gardens have several benefits:

Home grown food can be more nutritious.
You can produce a wider variety of food in you own garden than is normally available in stores.
Edible gardens can use less water than a lawn thereby benefiting the environment.

Alternative or Addition

If you don't want to plant food but would like a low maintenance alternative to a lawn you can plant a butterfly garden. Or can can do both.

Resources

There are several books available on the subject: Edible Estates: Attack on the Front Lawn, Edible Landscaping, The Edible Garden.

There are websites dedicated to the concept: Designing Edible Gardens, How to Design an Edible Garden, Edible Landscaping, Edible Gardens from Gardenguides.com, Save Money with Your Edible Garden.

You can use herbs as food and as decorative elements: Growing Herbs As Decorative Plants, How to Plant a Decorative Herb Garden.
