Women's Reproductive Rights

Contact: Lynn Alsmeyer-Johnson

Social Context

Recent legislation at the state and national levels, as well as court rulings and pharmaceutical practice, have been placing restrictions on women's access to abortion and birth control. Reproductive rights are fundamental to women’s rights. These rights should be accorded to all women, in America and the world. Every child should be a wanted child.

Purpose

The task force seeks to educate the congregation and the public, including youth, about threats to reproductive rights; to influence state and national legislation by lobbying representatives; and to encourage participation of men in choice and responsibility for their children. We also seek to protect women from violence from partners or parents.

Religious Rationale

Our goals are based on 3 of our 7 UU principles: the inherent worth and dignity of every person, world community with liberty and justice for all, and respect for the interdependent web of life. We also honor our long Unitarian Universalist history of supporting women’s rights.

Upcoming Projects and Activities

January: Special collection for Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington (PPMW)

January: Lobby Day in Richmond. Each year we join pro-choice groups from across Virginia to meet with our elected representatives and to rally for women’s reproductive rights while the state legislature is in session.
