March 2007
The Committee:
Membership: The Aesthetics Committee will consist of at least five (5) interested members, plus representatives from Buildings and Sunday Services Committees and the Choir. The Minister and the Worship Teams Coordinator shall serve ex officio. The chair is appointed by the Program Council.
Committee Charge: The Aesthetics Committee is charged with developing a master plan to improve the physical comfort, design motifs, and/or liturgical components in the Chapel and recommending same to the Board and the Congregation. Such recommendations may include:
·Policies: Define the manner and authority for alterations or additions to the Chapel.
·Problem Definition: The task to be accomplished and why.
·Design Modeling: Sketches, blueprints, mockups, catalogue listings the Committee recommends as desirable ways to meet the requirements.
·Resource Development and Materials Acquisition: A description of the materials to be obtained and whether they will be purchased ready-made, fabricate (on or off sight, by artisans or by member volunteers). An indication of who will do the proposed work (installed professionally, by the artistit(s), or volunteer talent and labor).
·Cost Projections and Timelines: An itemization of project priorities, costs, and deadlines.
·Fund Raising Procedures: Proposals for paying for the project, which may include the MVUC operating budget, special fund drive(s), designated gifts or bequests, or SBA monies. All fund raising activity must be approved by the Board of Trustees.
Implementation: Upon Board approval, the Aesthetics Committee may oversee implementation of project plans. This may include hiring vendors as necessary, recruiting volunteer participation, organizing fund raising and project quality control.
Consultation: In addition to seeking board Membership participation as planning proceeds, the Aesthetics Committee will consult with those sub-groups in the Congregation having expertise or likely to be effected by any changes in the Chapel, particularly Building and Sunday Services Committees, the Choir, and others as appropriate.
Communications: The Committee will utilize the Newsletter, surveys, bulletin boards, and/or free standing models to keep the Membership apprised of planning developments.
The Board of Trustees
·The Board determines the priority of Chapel aesthetics projects in light of church priorities.
·The Board retains approval/disapproval power prior to any action which alters, temporarily or permanently, the appearance of the Chapel.
·As the Chapel is central to Congregational life, the Board shall seek the advice and consent of the voting membership of the Congregation for any major changes, including financing.
·Given that, in matters of taste, it is unlikely that all will approve of any significant change in the Chapel, the Board will be the arbiter of any action to be undertaken.
·The Board determines the Committee budget after consultation with the Finance Committee and the Committee Chair.
