Acronyms (and other vocabulary)
So many acronyms and confusing words! What do they all mean? If you're hopelessly confused, this page is for you! They're listed in alphabetical order, and if you're in a real hurry to find something you can press ctrl+F and type in what you're looking for. Some of these were taken from continental YRUU's list, which can be found here.
Con: Not really an acronym, but probably confusing nonetheless. Con is short for "conference." Youth and advisors from many different churches go to cons to meet new people, have fun, and learn things about spirituality and leadership.
ConCon (Continental Conference): The annual YRUU Continental Conference, which is held in a different region of the continent each year.
DRE (Director of Religious Education): The individual employed by a local congregation to run the RE program.
DYSC: Short for JPDYSC; District Youth Steering Committee.
GA (General Assembly): The annual business meeting of the UUA, to which congregations send delegates. The youth participants form a Youth Caucus every year to discuss business and plan social events, with assistance from the Youth Office.
JPDYSC: Joseph Priestley District Youth Steering Committee; they plan all the cons and other activities for youth.
LDC (leadership development conference): For both youth and adults, and can take place on the local, district, and continental level.
MVUC: Mount Vernon Unitarian Church, the church our youth group is based out of.
R.E.: Religious Education.
SDC (spirituality development conference): Like an LDC, except focusing on spirituality, this is a training conference.
UU: Unitarian Universalist/ism.
UUA: Unitarian Universalist Association. The association of all the Unitarian Universalist congregations in Canada and the US. "UUA" is also used to refer to the UUA headquarters in Boston.
Worship: A ceremony or service led by youth, often at cons, centered around a theme.
YRUU: Young Religious Unitarian Universalists. That's what we are!
YSC: Youth Steering Committee; many churches with active youth groups have one. They meet and cover the business aspects of a youth group, they figure out dates, times, and places, etc. Some youth groups call them YACs (Youth Adult Committees).
